Sierra Fish Plants in Eastern Waters Continue

After a huge loss of fish at three hatchery services in the western Sierra and Southern California this summer, the Colorado Office of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has implemented a current selling strategy to continue putting trout in to waters that are favored by anglers.

Waterways in CDFW's South Coast Region and Inland Deserts Region are normally filled with trout from Mojave Lake Hatchery, Black Stone Hatchery and Fish Rises Hatchery, but this season, fish at all three facilities were contaminated with a bacterial outbreak. On July 20, CDFW released that extensive work to treat the fish had been unsuccessful, and pathologists recommended euthanizing 3.2 million fish and decontaminating the features in order to stop the spread of Lactococcus garvieae, which resembles streptococcus.

"Euthanization was not the results we wished for, but following exhausting all remedies, it had been obvious that removing the raceways, sterilizing the features and starting around was the sole alternative," said Jay Rowan, CDFW's Statewide Hatchery Program Manager.

Anglers were clearly concerned with decreased fishing chance for the remainder of 2020 and into 2021, and CDFW Hatchery Program staff immediately began to construct a "Approach B" to make sure that planting could keep on in a few capacity.

CDFW's multiphase selling plan calls for the reallocation of fish from decrease concern waters in other areas of their state to the best use seas in areas typically planted by the depopulated hatcheries this time of year. Throughout "period one" (which began the past week of July and will tell you mid-October), 16 water bodies in the Inland Leave and South Shore parts will soon be stocked with fish from the Moccasin Creek and San Joaquin hatcheries. Throughout "phase two" (which operates from the 2nd 1 / 2 of March through early spring), additional waters in Southern Florida will soon be stacked by Fillmore Hatchery. Stage two is determined by water conditions cooling enough to plant. During "phase 3" (spring and summer 2021), CDFW will handle stocking for the trout openers and summer fishing opportunities.
